Most of you know that I am a Mum to three wonderful little men. I became a Mum on February 19th 2006 and I have never looked back. Becoming a Mum is by far the best thing I have ever done in my life. My three sons are my greatest achievements in this world. They make me smile, they make me laugh, they make my heart melt, they make me so proud, and yes, sometimes they make me want to pull my hair out!! Most of what I write about on this blog is about my experience of being a Mum. However, how many of you know what I did before I became a Mum!??!
Before I became a Mum, I was a Social Worker. I studied for 5 years at University to obtain my Bachelor of Arts/Social Work Degree. I then worked in Health for 10 years. I worked at several large public hospitals in Melbourne and truly enjoyed it. I worked in so many different areas including Aged Care, Oncology, Haematology, Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Emergency Care, Drug and Alcohol Counselling and Kidney Dialysis and Transplantation. After several years of being a Social Worker, I needed another challenge, so I began my Masters Degree in Health Social Work. For 3 years, I worked full-time and studied part-time. It was a balancing act, but so rewarding. I completed my thesis not long before my 1st son was born. In fact, he came to my Graduation Ceremony when he was only 2 weeks old! He was very proud!!!
I have been back to work since having my first son and I have loved it! I have been doing locum work so I can work around the needs of my little family. Most recently, just before my 3rd son was born, I did some research work in Oncology and found that interesting and challenging.
In the near future, I will also share another love of mine before having children, travel!!
So that is what I did before becoming a Mum! So to all my lovely readers, I would love to hear more from you about what you did (and in many cases still do!) before becoming a Mum or changed your career path in some way.
Thanks!

before I was a mum (and a little bit after becoming a mum) I was a psychologist. Most days now I just feel like I NEED one rather than AM one. Oh and dont get me started on all the new AHRPA changes to maintaining registration. Not made for those of us with young children at all. Very difficult! But I do love the job AND I do love being a mum. And love hearing what we all did/got up to BC
ReplyDeleteOh i love this post, check you out, what a gal!! Before i was a mum . . . well i married my teenage love, so i was lucky to cram in 2 science degrees (pharmacology & psychology) & out popped my first baby as i turned 24 in 1999. Now . . . aged 36, with a high schooler, twins in year 4 & a baby boy in year 2, i'm so glad i started a sewing & design business in 2000 so when i had twins in 2001 i retired from the real world & have never looked back!! Oh still married to that gorgeous soldier i fell in love with 17 years ago too!! Love Posie
ReplyDeletebefore i became a mum, i was a primary school teacher, i guess i still am, but i have got 7 years family leave. Not too sure if I will go back or not?!
ReplyDeleteYour past work is an area I would be interested in moving into... maybe children'n health/mental health and education, working with a government body or local support services... it is nice to dream!

ReplyDeletepre kids I was a youth worker and did a BA (Youth Affairs) at uni. Have always enjoyed spending time with teenagers, never young kids..... things have changed a little now and I wouldn't change a thing!
